Job Description

Community & Family Resources (CFR) is an agency that assists individuals and families with substance abuse and gambling addictions and mental health needs.  CFR has an in-patient treatment facility and an in-patient adolescent treatment facility, both located in Fort Dodge. CFR also has outpatient offices located in Fort Dodge, Ames, Webster City, Boone, Clarion, Humboldt, Pocahontas and Rockwell City.  Our staff have the opportunity to provide support at many different levels with adults, as well as youth. 

We are currently seeking an Outpatient Addiction Treatment Counselor for our Boone Outpatient Facility. This position would provide chemical dependency and gambling treatment services to individuals with substance use and/or gambling disorders and their families, including assessment, individual/family treatment, group treatment, education/prevention services and support services.

This position requires an current Iowa tCADC, CADC, or IADC certification.  The hours are Monday through Friday, working one evening to facilitate groups. This may change to two nights a week in the future.


  • Bachelor or Master's degree from an accredited educational institution, preferably in the social or behavioral sciences & with the necessary courses to meet certification standards, or
  • Completion of an approved substance abuse counseling training program, or
  • At least three years experience as a full-time substance abuse counselor or gambling treatment counselor in a program similar to this agency, and
  • Must have and maintain a substance abuse counseling certification, i.e. tCADC, CADCr or IACD  from the Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Certification or a state that has reciprocity
  • Have received a minimum of 30 hours of training or education related to problem gambling within the previous 24 months and are working toward certification within a maximum of 24 months as a nationally certified gambling counselor or an Iowa-certified gambling counselor preferred
  • Currently maintain an active status as a licensed or certified practitioner in a counseling-related field and have received a minimum of 20 hours of training or education related to problem gambling within the previous 24 months preferred


Skills & Experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Must have or must secure within 12 months of hire, certification as a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC) or
  • Must have or must secure within 24 months of hire, certification as a International Alcohol & Drug Counselor (IADC)
  • Assists clients in completion of necessary assessment forms/documents
  • Conducts individual assessment sessions for completion of comprehensive assessment histories of clients
  • Participates with the direct supervisor in development of recommendations for clients
  • Prepares and distributes assessment results, reports, etc., as required & requested
  • Assists in other assessment processes are required and requested
  • Participates in coordination of community awareness programs
