Job Description

Community & Family Resources (CFR) is an agency that assists individuals and families with substance abuse and gambling addictions and mental health needs.  CFR has an in-patient treatment facility and an in-patient adolescent treatment facility, both located in Fort Dodge. CFR also has outpatient offices located in Fort Dodge, Ames, Webster City, Boone, Clarion, Humboldt, Pocahontas and Rockwell City.  Our staff have the opportunity to provide support at many different levels with adults, as well as youth.
 
We are looking to hire a two (2) full-time Prevention Specialists  for our Ames office.  The purpose of these positions is to provide prevention and educational services for CFR in accordance with the approved grants and contracts for services with funding agencies. The employee in this position must be enthusiastic, detail-oriented and a have a passion to learn and excel with minimal supervision. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have excellent listening comprehension and the ability to understand complex written and verbal instructions.  These individuals must function well in the local political environment in a courteous, professional manner with tact and poise. Travel throughout the counties served will be expected. 
 
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Community Health, Degree in Nursing or closely related degree or experience, with a minimum of two years experience in education, training, public relations or community activism, OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services with a minimum of three years work experience in a human service agency.
 

Skills & Experience

JOB QUALIFICATIONS & DUTIES :
  • Employee must have demonstrable knowledge in prevention theory, problem gambling and substance abuse information and public relations
  • Must be able to clearly articulate purpose, goals and objectives both verbally and in writing
  • Responsible for the development of service goals and objectives in conjunction with prevention team and prevention supervisor. These will be different for each funding source
  • Responsible for providing professional training to to the public, community coalitions, area agencies, support groups and schools in regard to prevention strategies. This includes training teachers, employers, human service personnel, and community members in prevention strategies which may be used to make changes in community attitudes and norms
  • Responsible for maintaining public relations between the agency prevention project and community resources. This also includes providing information on the range of problem gambling and substance abuse services available in the community
  • Provide group presentations in schools, industry, community groups and human services and other appropriate groups in the area of substance abuse, tobacco and gambling
  • Must be able to interpret grant requirements from the written documents and develop a useable, reasonable, and measurable work plan. When the work plans has been accepted by the funder, the employee must be able to provide the services outlined in the work plan to successfully complete the required services
  • Employee must understand community assessment and process
  • Must understand and be able to carry out the Strategic Prevention Framework, community activism and volunteer development models
  • Must be able to absorb change and be a lifelong learner
  • Keep informed regarding new information relevant to problem gambling and substance abuse prevention. It is important to share the information with other prevention specialists.
  • It is expected that a minimum of 40% of your work time will be in direct service to the communities you serve, and all paperwork will be completed in a timely manner as directed by the Prevention Supervisor
  • The successful employee will be able to work independently, using sound judgment while out in the communities
  • Must be able and willing to accept and learn changing duties dictated by funding
COMPUTER SKILLS:
  • Must have basic knowledge of contact management systems, internet software, spreadsheet software, word processing and PowerPoint
