Job Description

Job Summary: The basic tasks are to provide substance use and gambling treatment services to individuals with substance use and/or gambling disorders and their families, including assessment, individual/family treatment, group treatment, education/prevention services and support services.  The staff member in this position will be a detail-oriented, enthusiastic team and individual contributor with a passion for learning and ability to excel with minimal supervision.  In addition to possessing excellent verbal and written communication skills, the staff member should have excellent listening comprehension, including the ability to understand complex written and verbal instructions.  Because of the nature of the information with which the staff member will be working, this position requires a high degree of confidentiality.  This employee will work directly under the supervision of the Outpatient Addiction Program Supervisor.  A clear understanding of the agency’s mission, goals, and direction as set by the Board of Directors is essential.  Developing a clear understanding of the agency’s philosophy, the directions of the Outpatient Addiction Program Supervisor, and supporting his/her direction is required.  The staff member must function well in a sometimes emotionally intense environment where critical management decisions are made on an on-going basis and be able to interact in this environment in a courteous, professional manner with tact and poise.  The staff member will need to perform a variety of important, sometimes urgent, confidential, and complex tasks with constantly changing priorities.  The agency reserves the right to change or re-assign job duties or combine positions whenever necessary.
  • Assists clients in completion of necessary assessment forms/documents,
  • Conducts individual assessment sessions for completion of comprehensive assessment histories of clients,
  • Participates with the direct supervisor in development of recommendations for clients,
  • Prepares and distributes assessment results, reports, etc., as required and requested, and
  • Assists in other assessment processes as required and requested.
Treatment Services:
  • Provides client orientation to treatment services,
  • Assists in the development, coordination, and evaluation of the treatment program,
  • Conducts individual, family, and group sessions consistent with treatment plans,
  • Develops and coordinates individual treatment plans with client, supervisor, and referral sources,
  • Facilitates groups as required, and
  • Provides follow-up services.
Support Services:
  • Assists individuals and families in the intervention process through educational and planning sessions and, when feasible, participates in the interventions,
  • Maintains appropriate client and pre-client case records.
  • Provides clients and families with referral resources for the services not provided by this agency or when this agency’s services are not appropriate, and
  • Provides training for agency staff in areas of own expertise.

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution, preferably in the social or behavioral sciences and with the necessary courses to meet certification standards (listed below; in some cases, this may mean special courses in substance abuse counseling beyond the degrees), OR
  • At least three years of experience as a full-time substance abuse counselor or gambling treatment counselor in a program similar to this agency.
  • Hold and maintain a substance abuse counseling certification, i.e., Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor or International Alcohol and Drug Counselor from the Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Certification or a state that has reciprocity, AND
  • Have received a minimum of 30 hours of training or education related to problem gambling within the previous 24 months OR
  • Currently maintain an active status as a licensed or certified practitioner in a counseling-related field and have received a minimum of 20 hours of training or education related to problem gambling within the previous 24 months.

Language ability:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, regularly, and fluently in English; bilingual (English/Spanish) abilities are preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals,
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or agency employees.
Other skills and abilities:
  • Ability to apply previous experience and training to the provision of substance use treatment services;
  • ability to establish good working relationships with clients and staff, ability to secure appropriate information by direct and collateral interviews;
  • ability to analyze problems presented, to bring agency/community resources to bear within policies and regulations, and to develop and implement effective courses of action;
  • ability to prepare clear and concise case records and to keep other relevant records;
  • ability to prepare regular and special written and oral reports;
  • ability for public speaking;
  • skill in client evaluation and therapeutic planning;
  • ability to deal with stress in a high-stress environment;
  • ability to deal with clients who are involved in the criminal justices system;
  • ability to meet the demands of an intense level of documentation;
  • ability to work with and coordinate mental health services for clients; and
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.
