Job Description

The purpose of this position is to provide educational instruction by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas. Other duties may include developing lesson plans, delivering group and individual student instruction within the established curriculum guidelines, collaborating with other educators or professional staff within the community school district for support, and addressing instructional or classroom issues. The incumbent may respond to a wide range of inquiries from students, parents, guardians, or students’ home schools in their originating county. The incumbent would also seek ongoing education related to substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. This position is unique as it provides school based services within a residential substance abuse treatment program for adolescents. This employee will work directly under the Adolescent Residential Program Supervisor.
Job knowledge, Skills and Ability -
  • Employee must possess the knowledge required to implement educational standards specific to child development ages 12-18.
  • Employee must maintain competencies for satisfactory performance to include appropriate codes, policies, regulations, and/or laws related to education; age appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, stages of child development, and behavioral management strategies.
  • Ability to be flexible is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to operate equipment using standardized methods.
  • Ability to work with diversity of individuals and/or groups.
  • Ability to problem solve, analyze issues, and create action plans.
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships, adapt to changing work priorities, maintain confidentiality, exhibit tact and patience, and be flexible in work hours.
Other duties -
  • Completion of paperwork related to correspondence and follow-up with referral sources, education charts, and client information will be done in a timely manner.
  • Must be able and willing to accept changing duties related to a residential treatment environment.
  • This person also supports the classroom aide for the purpose of assisting him/her in implementation of established curriculum and individual student plans.
  • Tracking budget expenditures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience

Education and/or experience -
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
  • Current teacher’s certification and/or license, maintained/updated when necessary. Special Education Endorsement.
  • Prefer experience in the behavioral services field.
Computer skills -
To perform this job successfully, the staff member must have basic knowledge of:
  • Contact management systems,
  • Internet software,
  • Spreadsheet software,
  • Word-processing,
  • PowerPoint.
Language ability -
  • Ability to communicate effectively, regularly, and fluently in English; bilingual (English/Spanish) abilities are preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, community members, clients, or agency employees.
